Guidelines for General Sustainability and Development grants

Read these grant guidelines before you apply. The grant guidelines include important information about this grant category including what you can use the grant for and the criteria used by the General Grants Advisory Committee to assess your application.

1. What is the objective of the General - Sustainability and Development grant category?

To assist with the sustainability and development of Australian community broadcasting beyond the individual station / organisation level through grants to support innovative capacity building projects outside the scope of other General Grant categories.

2. Who is eligible to apply?

  • community radio station with a long-term or a temporary licence
  • state, regional and national community broadcasting associations

Applicants must be non-profit organisations that are incorporated or equivalent.

Creative partnerships between stations and organisations whose goals are compatible with those of community broadcasting are encouraged, however the application must come from the station/sector organisation.

A station with a temporary licence must have been on air for at least two years cumulatively prior to applying.  Additional conditions are imposed on temporary licensees with regard to ownership of assets purchased with the grant.

3. How much can you apply for?

There is no specific limit. Grants in previous years have ranged from $2,000 to $50,000.

  • National community broadcasting sector representative organisation applications for organisational support will be capped at $15,000 per grant and will be subject to funds available.

Please refer to the General Grants summary of Past Grant Allocations for grants awarded in this category in the last round to gain a sense of typical allocations.

4. What are the priorities in this grant category?

The following will be prioritised:

  • Projects that are innovative, with plans that demonstrate quality and imagination
  • Applications that demonstrate that your organisation or project partners are contributing in cash or in kind, such as through fundraising or volunteer labour

Your application will be a lower priority if there are other sources of funds that are more appropriate to resource the project.

5. What can you use the grant for?

Grants can be used for:

  • Innovative one-off or discrete projects that will assist in developing the sustainability of community broadcasting
  • Mentoring placements between volunteers / staff members in community broadcasting organisations
  • National community broadcasting sector representative organisations can also apply for organisational support for policy development and services that benefit and specifically relate to the applicant organisation’s membership. However, such applications must demonstrate how their activities and services are complementary to, and do not duplicate, those already conducted and provided by the CBAA for the benefit of the sector as a whole.

Such organisations must demonstrate within their application that at a minimum:

(a) Your current financial membership comprises a majority of your potential constituency; and

(b) Your current financial membership is drawn from a majority of states and territories.

Please note that national sector representative organisations can apply for conferences/seminars and organisational support in the one round of Sustainability and Development grants, however separate grant applications must be completed for each.

6. What can't you use the grant for?

  • Activities that are currently or more appropriately funded in other CBF grant categories. Please note that conference activity should be applied for under Sustainability and Development - Conference grants.
  • Transmission related costs - you should apply under Transmission Support Grants. For transmission equipment costs apply under Transmission Support Grants - Equipment and for transmission operational costs apply under Transmission Support Grants - Operational Subsidy
  • Training of station personnel - you should apply under the Training Delivery  grants category
  • Mentoring placements involving people outside the community broadcasting sector or for mentoring between people within your own organisation
