Guidelines for Ethnic Development - New Program Group grants

Read these grant guidelines before you apply. Even if you frequently apply under this category, read them each round, as the grant guidelines are regularly revised. The grant guidelines include important information about this grant category including what you can use the grant for and the criteria used by the Ethnic Grants Advisory Committee to assess your application.

1. What is the objective of the New Program Group grant category?

To assist the ongoing development of ethnic community broadcasting in Australia through grants to assist with program start-up costs for new language/cultural groups becoming involved in ethnic community broadcasting at a particular station for the first time.

2. Who is eligible to apply?
  • community radio station with a long-term or a temporary licence applying on behalf of an eligible program group

  • an umbrella group (an incorporated ethnic community broadcasting association) representing one or more ethnic program groups at a particular licensed community radio station.  Please contact the CBF for further information.

Grants are not available to stations broadcasting under a narrowcast licence. A station with a temporary licence must have been on air for at least two years cumulatively prior to applying. Additional conditions are imposed on temporary licensees with regard to ownership of assets purchased with the grant.

For a program group to be eligible:

  • The program group must have started at the station within the last 12 months prior to this application.
  • The program that the program group produces must be eligible for a CBF Ethnic Program Grant
  • The program group produces programs in a language that has not been broadcast before at your station or is for a new cultural group not previously represented at the station.   A New Community Group produces programs for an emerging or refugee community identified on the CBF website at the link Definition and List of Emerging Communities.  Note that a few selected language/cultural group programs can be considered either for an emerging community or an established community, depending on program content.  Refer to the list for more details.  If your language/cultural group is not on this list but you think it might fit the definition of a new or emerging community, contact the CBF.
3. How much can you apply for?
  • New Language Group - Up to $1,000

  • New Community Group - Up to $1,500

 4. What are the priorities in this category?

  • resource materials for regular program production, such as CDs, internet access, news sources;
  • materials to promote the program in your community;
  • small equipment (such as portable recorders);
  • specialised training (however the station is encouraged to apply for a CBF Training Grant for this purpose).

Any materials purchased will be the property of the station, held for use by current and future ethnic broadcasters.
